Mike Giant X VCJ

It was a union I will never forget. Two legendary artists that work in black and white ink finally meeting. Two of my favorite friends. I was lucky enough to have received a very nice visit from artist Mike Giant. I was able to hook him up with a factory tour at our skateboard manufacturing facility here in Santa Barbara thanks to my buddy Rob Washburn. I am so happy about this photo, words cannot express! Glad to unite two VERY talented artists!!!!

Giant Thangs

Two weekends ago I went up to San Francisco and got a tattoo by an artist named Mike Giant. This is something I have contemplated four 4 years and it has now physically manifested itself onto my body. WHAT A TRIP.  I feel blessed but also am experiencing different levels of anxiety that come with this new change, AND yes, I am a scaredy cat pussy! I tired to take as many  as photos  as I could during my session,  but I eventually lost interest of trying to work my camera because I was so amused/distracted/anxious with the events from the day. Here are a couple of random shots that I took from my afternoon with Mike and my best friend Nicole <3

Neighbors: Mike Giant

Mike Giant. For those of you who know me, you know how much I love this dude. After 4 years solid of being a dedicated fan and art geek over Giant... collecting his art books, reading blogs, and consuming R8, Mike continues to be my favorite artist, and I really don't see that changing any time soon. I am a loyal fan. He is unique and wise beyond others. In addition to being an amazing illustrator, I love his personality.  He always inspires me.

Inspired by Joshy D:: Rebel 8

I first learned about  Mike Giant and Rebel 8 from reading Juxtapoz Magazine.  I saw Giant's cover and at that moment my life changed a little. I was overwhelming inspired by his Hispanic themed graphics and use of symbolism that I immediately started researching his work.. thus I discovered Rebel 8. After attending Magic Trade show in Las Vegas, it was fate that brought me together with these guys. I spotted them in the cafeteria eating by themselves and I immediately ran over and asked if I could sit with them. I was so happy that day because Joshy gave me a Mike Giant Sharpie and a small book of illustrations and quotes that Mike had done. It is still one of my prized possessions that I keep close. I can't explain the way I feel about Mike's art or Joshy's enthusiasm for Rebel 8, all I know is that it makes me feel incredibly happy and inspired. This video makes me feel that way too and makes me have hope for my own dreams. I am hoping to get my first and only tattoo from Mike this fall. Get at the brand, they are coming up.

SWINDLE Mag Featuring Mike Giant

As if I couldn't talk about Mike Giant anymore, I just read this article in SWINDLE Mag on my lunch break. I propose that you do the same here.

The article touches on Mike's inspiration and what has lead him to be where he is now. Not only does he draw for five hours a day, he really likes porn and having sex. Two things I did not know, that I now do. Ha! Maybe that is why he is so good at drawing hot beezies. It is not featured online, but in the magazine there is a page dedicated to a "day in the life" of Mike G. I thought it was pretty interesting. I encourage you to read this article, as he always inspires me, and hopefully inspires you as well.

Blaze It

Just another Mike Giant props. Fool is trying to legalize the greens, damn. Ok. Here is just a pic that should be shared. Mike Giant rallys people to blaze it in SF, and they all meet up and burn one down, and kick it. That sounds fun. Sometimes I think The Bay is where its at. SRSLY. Not just for blazing, but for art, which is really what I'm talking about.

Mike Giant is SUCHA OG

Every time I read anything about Mike Giant, it confirms that he truly is an original gangster. He doesn't give a fuck about impressing people and doing what society tells him to, he does what ever he wants, he does it with style, and he knows exactly how to articulate himself with out sounding like an "artsy kook." He is honest, he is true, he is not a poser, and he is straight up. That is what I love about him.

This is my favorite quote/ response from his recent interview on FecalFace.com- because I too had this question- what is next after the hipster generation?

Q: Everybody knows hipsters, graffiti, track bikes, etc are dead and pretty much played out. Where do you see the next trend/counterculture scene headed.... -submitted by Kurt Dalen

MG: Gosh, that's harsh, Kurt. First of all, I'm a "grandpa hipster", and it suits me just fine. And after dedicating almost 20 years to writing graffiti, I hope it never dies. And as for track bikes, there have been hip, cocky young men and women riding them around the streets of San Francisco for over 100 years! Look it up. None of this stuff is played out, dead, or otherwise. It's ongoing. You'll see for yourself as you get older. The next thing will simply be a remix of shit from the past, because none of us are really all that imaginative anyway.

Good words of wisdom.

As for this "Muerte", well, can we say skeet skeet?
