Santa Barbara Film Festival Opening Night

Santa Barbara has a long history of being a key player in the motion picture and film industry. With a star studded population, Santa Barbara is known for being a quaint place to relax that is a hop, skip, & jump away from Hollywood & Los Angeles. Commonly referred to as the American Rivera, Santa Barbara is host to the Santa Barbara International Film Festival which has established itself as the preeminent Oscar film festival and is two week event that our town anxiously awaits ever year.

It was truly an honor to attend my first opening & red carpet event of the SBFF at the historical Arlington Theatre, graciously invited by my dear friend & Santa Barbara photographer Rachel Moyer. We started off the evening with a quick cocktail at The Marquee and then walked over to the Arlington to watch Diane Keaton & Kevin Kline grace the awaiting crowd of fans for the opening of festival and new film, A Darling Companion.

The Arilgton Theatre is one of the most beautiful places in Santa Barbara.

At the Gala, there were two DJ's, a live band, and an open bar for the entire party (like 10), along with horderves from some of the best restaurants in town (there is too many to count!)

All in all, the evening was one to remember and I felt so honored to attend! The Film Festival is a truly amazing event and filled with culture and creativity... all things Santa Barbara!

Two Santa Barbara events you do not want to miss!

It is finally done. Stacy Peralta's latest film... The Bones Brigade: An Autobiography.

As a Santa Barbara native, I was always surrounded by skateboarding and surfing. There is just something about this town that breads this creatively infused lifestyle. As many of you may or may not know, Powell-Peralta is a local Santa Barbara company that has deep routs in the skateboard industry. When I say deep, I mean DEEP. The Bones Brigade docmentary is "an emotional, intimate, and exciting film about a group of dorky American boys who turned skateboarding from a fringe pastime to a thrilling action sport and a multi-million dollar industry." It currently is at Sundance in Utah and then the second showing in its history will be at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. If you thinking about watching this flick, I strongly suggest you get there early. Red Carpet event starts at 7 PM Thursday February 2, 2012 at The Arlingon Theatre. Tommy Guerro, Steve Caballero, Rodney Mullen, Lance Mountain, Mike McGill, Stacy Peralta and George Powell have all confirmed their attendance and a Q & A will be held after the show. Tony Hawk will unfortunately be out of the country and will not be able to attend. Hope to see you there!

And just as exciting is this years 2012 Quicksilver Rincon Classic presented by Channel Islands Surfboards! I love this event because it always brings together Santa Barbara's amazing surfing community and talent for a fun weekend at my favorite beach. The event was scheduled for this weekend, but due to rain it will be postponed so please check out the Surf Happens facebook page for more info or the site.

The guy is so creative, funny, and talented it is overwhelming for me at times (did you see his movie Dirty Hands?). Apparently this is Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's second time requesting Choe's assistance and creative talents in sprucing up the new office with some inspiring art. It's that time of the year... the best time of the year :: for the surfers who are serious about the sport :: and for girls who want to show off their new couture bikinis and winter bodies. The waves are pumping and the sun is bright & warm on The North Shore of Hawaii. The community is alive and the party is on. I recently started using this amazing product and I couldn't be happier with the results. Thank you so much Jackie Cossart!! Check out Sweet Blessed Bee Magic if you have a chance at your local health food store or retailer. I picked up my jar at Lazy Acres here in Santa Barbara and my skin hasn't been happier! I use it for everything and carry it around in my purse daily. It is amazingly hydrating, works as a great night cream, heals cuts and scrapes faster, and the bee pollen and honey proteins help eye lashes grow! Best of all it is organic and local!

Contains only pure, live, natural ingredients:

While doing some research online, I came across this informative website that had lots of info including the benegfits of honey! Read up! Makes me want to go purchase bee pollen right now!

Honey can assist wound healing because:

   2. Honey's antibacterial property can diffuse deeply into skin tissues, so that it can reach deep-seated infections.

   4. The osmotic effect of honey lifts dirt out of the wound bed.
   5. Dressings do not stick to the surface of the wound allowing easy removal of dressings. The osmotic effect of the honey keeps the wound moist, clean and prevents the dressing sticking to the wound. Tissue damage and pain are reduced when dressings are changed as there is no tearing away of newly formed tissue. Healing is more rapid.
   6. Reduces scarring. The honey draws body fluids and nutrients to the wound area and so assists cell growth and prevents a scar forming as the wound is kept moist. Honey provides nutrients (vitamins, minerals and amino acids) to tissues
   7. Promotes more rapid healing because the honey stimulates tissue regeneration.
   8. Acidity of honey releases oxygen from haemoglobin new growing cells need oxygen. Honey stimulates the white blood cells.
   9. Hydrogen peroxide in honey has an insulin-like effect and promotes wound healing. Insulin is a growth hormone
10. Anti-inflammatory action of honey soothes and promotes healing, reduces pain and swelling
11. Honey forms a protective barrier to prevent cross-infection of wounds.
12. Honey removes malodour from wounds by killing the bacteria which produce ammonia
13. Honey does not damage the surrounding tissue
14. Honey minimizes the need for grafting

Gabrielle Bernstein:: Spirit Junkie:: Expect Miracles

For the past year, I am proud to say I have became a devoted Spirit Junkie thanks to Gabrielle Bernstein. Fate, or twitter, brought us together. Your call. One day, I got a message in my inbox that Gabby was following me on twitter. I went to go check her out on her site and felt as though an angel literally came down to help me. Her first book Add More Ing seemed like too much of a coincidence with her on the skateboard (riding BONES Wheels if I might add). Since Gabrielle's introduction, I have read both of her books that are based on the spiritual bible- A Course in Miracles and listen to her weekly Vlogs for inspiration. Gabby has also reignited my goal of mastering mediation and inspirited me beyond belief!! I highly recommend checking out what Gabby has to say and in the words of a Spiritual Junkie, expect miracles and fill you life with love!

I also wanted to add that I am currently reading A Course in Miracles and reading Spirit Junkie first is really helping me understand the text :)

I am sorry I have been laggin' on blogging lately. It seems like life is just passing me by way too fast, leaving me little time on the computer and no more day light after work. I am going to try to post more pics asap! For starters:: One of my best girl friends Ashley just got hitched to her high school sweetheart Sean. The wedding was in beautiful La Paz Mexico, on the Sea of Cortez. I have never been to La Paz and I was taken back by its raw beauty and crystal clear ocean. Female skateboarding is currently still an infant in the action sports industry. To give you some perspective, it is almost where woman's surfing was when Roxy was introduced back in 90's, except girl's skateboarding doesn't have a "Roxy" yet. With the female vert event being canceled this year at the ESPN X-Games, and slimming amount of contests this year for professional female skaters, the VANS Combi Pool Classic is a big deal. It was introduced last year when the female's were booted out of the prestigious Protec Pool Party at the VANS Combi Bowl. The division was canceled so the females created their own event. I have been lucky enough to attend this event for the second year in a row and I always walk away inspired to skateboard. Here are a couple photos from the contest and a rad little video made by USC senior Amelia Brodka.

East Coast girl Nora Vasconcellos and Allysha Bergado were stand outs at this years contest. Allysha took home first place. Did I mention she is 15 years old?

Winners podium! A big ups to Cara-Beth Burnside and Mimi Knoop for working with VANS to help create this event. You gals are leaders in this movement and are paving the way for women's skateboarding.

Indian Summer is really going late into the year. Yesterday and well into the evening, Santa Barbara temperatures reached the mid 90's and boy was it hot outside!! It was the perfect energy and setting for the photo shoot we had scheduled with a talented group of friends and our surf goddess subject and Billabong Girls team rider- Bo Stanley. The beautiful sunset made some of the key pieces we photographed from Billabong's Designers Closet glow! Here is a little sneak peek of the shoot from my Iphone.

I had the pleasure of experiencing my first trip to Lake Tahoe recently for the marriage of Emily Penner and Tarik Khashoggi! Tarik has been a long time friend of my beau and I was so flattered we were invited to share their special moment. A couple of weekends ago, Labor Day to be exact!, Bud Light Lime hosted their second stop on the Surf Series Tour at C-Street in Ventura. The whole weekend was a blast like always and I had a really great time. The weather was lame but other than that, the people and the atmosphere were awesome! Thanks again to Bud Light Lime and Benji Weatherly for hosting such a great surf contest.

Musing on Baby Vamp Jessica From HBO's True Blood:: Little Red

After watching the season finale of HBO's True Blood, I am not shy to say that I am completely inspired by Jessica, the Baby Vampire. I am a total dork when it comes to this show, but can you blame me? What's not to like about vampires, werewolves, witches, magic, cold blooded drama, and sex? This season is finally over and the final episode left me with thoughts of Jessica in her velvet cloak and a bolt of energy to start Halloween planning. I LOVE HALLOWEEN!!! A couple of weekends ago, one of my best male friends Kyle Hollister got hitched to a beautiful women by the name of Ashley Swan Woods. Their wedding was one of the most touching ceremonies I have ever been to and I feel so blessed to be a friend of theirs and to have been in their presence for such a special union. Kyle's father, Doyle Hollister, presented a touching speech about the significance of the land their family built their legacy upon and its significance to his son's special day. It was truly magical. My camera was being fussy so I only got a couple of pics with my Rebel, but thank you to Nils Von Erik from Smile Studios for letting me repost and Kilian for a couple I phone snaps. xoxo

My First Mural:: A Mandy Tribute:: The Process

This past weekend I was blessed to be given the opportunity to participate in a Santa Barbara community art project with the goal to help the infamous Funk Zone flourish again. Laura Inks, the director of the project explains “We signed the lease for the gallery, opened the front door, and looked out at broken windows, graffiti-covered walls, and a trash-strewn parking lot,” she said. “It wasn’t pretty Santa Barbara, and I knew we had to make this street more visitor-friendly.” in an Independent interview that can be read in full here. So Inks devolved the mural project for the time being, and with this in mind, I wanted to make the street really pretty...Mandy Candy Pretty.

I am so happy to share my muse Mandy with all of you and everyone who passes the mural on Mason Street. Please go check it out in person, right next to Hot Spots Coffee. Here are a couple of pictures of how she developed ;)

I had to paint over an existing mural so here is my primered wall...lol. Needed a fresh white canvas to start!

I am so happy that my art is in the street! The viewer experiences it in such a different way, rather than say a gallery, and with all the celebrating street art has been receiving lately, I am so proud to celebrate my first crack at it.

When I met Carissa Moore at the Billabong Design for Humanity, I told my friend Rachie that she was going to win the world title. I think all of us who follow professional surfing knew it was going to happen, but I can't express how happy I was when she won it! She is the most humble, sweet girl and I was so inspired after I met her. I can't tell you enough how much all these women inspire me. They are pushing action sports to new levels and inspiring generations of women ahead to charge on with their goals while promoting an active, healthy lifestyle. All the things I love. This video makes me happy.
